Complex Rectilinear Study
Brief: Create a complex grouping of rectilinear volumes. Integrate visual balance and continuity. Any material(s).
For research, I looked to Piet Mondrian. His work leads the eye on a visual pathway, using abstract lines and shapes. He initially started with a tree and ended somewhere near Broadway Boogie Woogie.
I started to make basic half scale models out of blue foam. This was mainly to get the correct proportions of the volumes.
Next, I took the measurements of the main volumes of the piece, and put them into CAD. This allowed me to think about how the pieces would attach together as well as adding more smaller and detailed pieces to the work.
Finally, I had to figure out what this piece was going to be made out of. I was comfortable with wood and I thought that since it was inspired by trees, it should be made out of trees. But I needed something completely foreign to add some sort of accent to the piece. So I selected a few pieces to be made out of matte black acrylic.
